Daniel Frei has studied pedagogy and protestant theology at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. After working for 15 years as a language teacher and for five years as a minister of the Swiss Reformed Church he left in 2001 as an Ecumenical Fraternal Worker of Mission 21 (in Basel, Switzerland) to Chile. Here he is living with his wife Barbara and with his children Alex (6) and Isabel (3).

At the Facultad Evangélica de Teología he is working as professor of Practical Theology with a specialization in Religious Education. Concepción lies in the 8th region of Chile which is the stronghold of Pentecostal churches. Pentecostals make up to 50% in some cities and have a very marked proper culture. In Chile the government is pushing the equality of religious rights which means that there are new work fields for evangelical theological formation (Professor of Christian Education in Colleges, ministers in prisons, hospitals or the army for instance) The students at the FET (actually up to 50) come from very different church backgrounds buy in their majority they are Pentecostals.

Chile has a special historical background of Pentecostalism and some particularities which make it unique. In 1909 the first self-sustaining Pentecostal church broke off the Methodist Church under the leading of Willis Hoover, a Methodist minister from USA.

Daniel Frei is working on a thesis which is first of all examining the historical, religious sociological and theological background of Chilean mestize Pentecostal Churches. The focus of this thesis are pedagogical elements of education within the Iglesia Evangélica Pentecostal, one of the biggest and oldest churches. In a secund part there is presented a field research with interviews and material as participant observator about the IEP. The last part is about the so called "Pedagogy of Conversion". It tries to explain processes within the Pedagogy of Congregation (Gemeindepädagogik) with the purpose to establish a dialogue with the traditional protestant Pedagogy of Congregation.

Important elements are different forms of reenforcement of the central experiencie of conversion and the dynamic relation between individual extatic experiences and collective group proceses which offer the codes and the behaviour to express emotional experiences and to integrate it into the individuals live.

This thesis is guided by Prof. Dr. Ralph Kunz, Professor of Practical Theology at the Faculty of Theology, University of Zurich, Switzerland.
